Dolly Doxie

Hey Friends, I'm Dolly my people wanted to put me to sleep 4 Ever since I became paralyzed! THANKFULLY the vet called Dachshund Rescue Of South Florida & www.floridadachshundrescue.com they not only saved my life, they got me the surgery to hopefully help me walk again! www.GetALifePetRescue.com is fostering/rehabilitating me and I get to play with toys! I currently scoot real fast with my front legs and drag my back legs. I don’t know when I’m pooping but my foster mom takes me out after I eat and tells me when I done my business. Around that time and other time through out the day she will squeeze my bladder so I can release my urine. I do know she is doing that but right now I can’t make it happen on my own.

This combined effort by three rescues to aid Dolly in her rehabilitation, shares the devotion of rescuers to come together to celebrate Dolly’s life.

Please read the following updates by Dolly’s foster mom, on Dolly's rehabilitation.
If you are interested in adopting Dolly please contact www.floridadachshundrescue.com

“WHAT Squeaked?”

“Ooh I’ll shake it!”

Dolly’s first night:

Blessings Dolly is playing! YES!!! She has not peed or pottied with out being expressed or stimulated BUT she’s playing!!! She gives kisses and tells you where she wants to be rubbed. Head down, for neck and side lean for belly. She ate her dinner in a hot dog minute! She’s has the guest room with low foam mattress and flat beds at different heights. I had her alone in the kitchen for a bit to see how she moves on the tile with out blankets. The answer was pretty fast, especially for a treat!

Honestly she started playing as soon as I dropped the toy! In munities she showed me love, personality, playfulness and quality of LIFE! How her people could have canceled that moment from ever happening helps me understand the phrase “makes my blood boil” when I think of what they were willing to do with out checking other avenues!

A few days in foster care:

Dolly has been integrated in with the group with no problems, like she was here before. She has a bed by my feet while I’m on the computer. She must have blankets/sheets something to burrow under. She pooped a few times on her own today and I was so excited I Tweeted about her BM on TWITTER! LOL!

We have an appointment later this week to see the route of treatment so I will get back with you then, unless she does something way cute, a glamour photo or something like that.
Please check Sabrett’s Story to find out about another paralyzed Dachshunds rehabilitation.

Almost two weeks in foster care:

Dolly has gone for two holistic treatments and the vet says she has good sensory reflex in the lower legs! I demonstrated how Dolly wags her tail when I talk excited & call her name. This is really good that her brain connects to her tail reaction. Dolly also has other good signs and fab muscle tone. The thing is to encourage her to use her legs. The morning after I got her she was integrated into the house with the other dogs just like she was always here. No one grumbled and she has been scooting to follow me ever since. She gets her bladder expressed to urinate and her lower body reacts to that as well. Her legs kick and tail is erect. These are things that my previous fosters did not do so early on. Happy, joy, joy!

This pic is Dolly with my Weenies going on a drive. She sits in the car harness and doesn’t have much to say when she is riding with the other dogs but when she is alone she wants to tell me everything, ya know house gossip, LOL!. She is vary clingy and has to be touching my feet when I’m sitting down. She is super loving. She begged to sleep in my bed and she had her head over me most of the night!
So bottom line, I am so grateful to have her! WHAT A PERSONALITY! I have accidently called her Lexi. Ooops! Lexi was of my other spinal injury Doxies who was nick named Lixi Lexi for all her kisses!

Lexi was adopted with Laci (another paralyzed Doxi that is also walking again) by Lori who always has some fab information to share. Here is Lori’s latest:

I have subscribed to a Yahoo group (Dodger's list) which was developed to help dogs with back problems. I'm sure you already know all this information, but I thought I would send a few links - they have a lot of great information (like using an Ace bandage as a sling to support the back legs while walking, recommendations on crate rest and physical therapy, etc.).

Here are Lori's girls at our Bark Splash Luau last weekend, they have coordinating diapers! Heee heee!

They are certified therapy dogs and Laci started working with people who have spinal injuries! I AM SO PROUD of the girls and their parents! Check Lexi & Laci's Stories

Today we did glamour shots for Dolly’s adoption collage.

Dolly can strike a serious pose! Look at those eyes! They are saying “I’m the sweetest, kissy girl with a lot of love to share!”

Dolly does several types of physical therapy and some in the water. In this photo she is swimming holding her rear end up all by herself!!! YES! When she first started swimming she needed an additional strap around her waist to keep her spine even with the water. Now baby’s got back! LOL! That’s back & rear end muscles.  She totally responds to touch and if you rub near her rear end tail area she gives kisses weather you are in her face or not so she does have some sensory back there.
